Hakuba, Japan

Hakuba has an average snowfall of 11 meters per year. The first ski lift in the Hakuba Valley was built over 70 years ago. But freeskiing has only been in focus for a few years. In fact, skiing outside the slopes is still partly forbidden. However, the people in Hakuba knows how important access to freeskiing and ski touring is if they want to attract skiers from all over the world. Japow – now a commonly used word for Japanese powder snow – has become a must for dedicated skiers worldwide. The potential, development and even survival of skiing in Japan is considered dependent on international ski fanatics having japow on their bucket list. It also requires ski resorts to provide the possibility of access to the backcountry. Of course, that is something we welcome, and we are really looking forward to the day the FWT season kicks off.
