How do friends know when they’ve found that perfect moment together in the mountains? By scrolling through photos at the end of the day and saying—that one? Through stories in front of a cosy fire that relive the glory of a particular run? No. When skiers share a perfect moment together, they instinctively know it. And they also know the lucky reality: they haven’t found this moment, it has found them.
When you stand in your skis on a summit, a grand sweep of sky and snow and geology in front of you, the scene rings heavy in your body, and your heart, it is said, grows two sizes. This is the silent, perfect moment that skiers all know intimately, and which we dedicate our lives to sharing every time we go to the mountains. The rest is just window dressing.
